Call to action - would you like to help organise a hackathon?
Gain IT upskill experience whilst helping non-profits.
With a focus on Environmental and Nature Conservation charities, we offer opportunities for experienced IT professionals to update their skill set, gain real experience in a new role or to simply use their skills to do some good.
Our mission
To help charities in need of software development expertise whilst providing IT professionals the opportunity to apply new skills to real problems or to gain experience in areas that may not be directly related to their current position.
Charities have difficulty recruiting IT professionals. The main reason for this is that charities often operate on a limited budget and are not able to offer competitive salaries.
Technical volunteers can play a vital role in helping charities to use technology to further their mission and make a positive impact in the world.
Our projects
React/Next JS
The charity wants to be able to generate a particular visualisation for some very important data and also have an UI to manage the visualisations. This is a nice little React project to work on. Ideally basic TypeScript and also react-vis to be used for the visualisation. Bit components out of it would also be good but everything is open to discussion.
Register interestGoogle Tag Manager or Plausible
The charity would like to understand how its comprehensive search form is being used by ecological data scientists. They would like form tracking added and set up accordingly. They are already using basic Google Analytics. Another possibility is to use Plausible Analytics
Register interestDrupal Portal - HELP!!
A charity has lost a Drupal portal (long story). All they have is a zip of the installed application and database taken off the server! Do you think you could get it up and running again? An added complexity is that there are possibly some (cron/bash?) scripts that glue it all together but if you could at least get the application running that would really help their developers.
More details and a possible planRails Web Application
A charity needs help with their open source Ruby on Rails web application. We are just scoping out projects and gathering developer interest but what is needed:
- General Ruby on Rails development
- Modernisation of the whole platform
If you want Ruby On Rails dev experience or an opportunity to lead a platform revamp in a software design or project management capacity get in touch!!
Register interestAutomated Testing
We have lots of opportunities for writing automated tests. There is flexibility with how these are implemented so if you want real experience with a particular framework you can probably get it. Great for lead and design experience as well as there are some blank canvases with an opportunity to design automated test suites from scratch.
Register interestForum, Knowledge Base, Support Ticketing
A charity has old style PhP forum boards (PunBB). They really would like to move to modern forums and they would also benefit tremendously from support ticketing and a knowledge base. They have briefly considered Freshdeck as a host service. Any help with this in any capacity, including migrating old forum posts to new forums, is most welcome!
Register interestHackathon
The charity has a couple of application development type projects in mind which they think would be suitable for a hackathon.
Possible tech: UX/Advanced CSS/React/GIS Maps
Register interestLow-Code - VisionX? Retool?
Charity very interested in low-code application development. They have an application to help nature that needs developing and with limited developer resources, a low-code solution is something they'd love to research into. Their lovely small dev team are experienced full stack developers but have too much work to do RnD into this. Could you help them in some way? Perhaps develop some prototypes for them? They use AWS heavily and are open source Java/ReactJS/NextJS.
Possible tech: VisionX or Retool
Register interestGIS Web Development
Charity would like some "beautiful maps" generated from dynamic spatial data. Maps are generated using Leaflet. They'd really like to improve the presentation of the maps and modernise the temporal-spatial navigation features. May be a nice one for a front end web developer with Design and Javascript skills.
Possible tech: GIS, Web FE Dev and Design
