How Upskill Hub volunteering works

We have real IT projects that are immensely valuable to a charity. As such they require a professional approach.

The way projects are managed

When possible, an agile way of working is adhered to. This helps to ensure that any work done on a project is of value to a charity, keeps the project moving forward and can be used by other developers.

What does upskill mean?

You're already experienced but need to update your skills to keep yourself relevant and employable. Developers typically do this by working on their own side projects. This is fine until you make a big jump to some new tech in which case working on a real project with fellow professionals is what you really need to do, especially if you are going to be interviewed for a new job/contract and you want these skills on your CV and to talk bout them with a confidence that you only get with real experience.

Can't some projects just be made open source

This may be applicable to some projects and is certainly something we are interested in. Its not unusual for charity sector applications to be open source but they are not managed in that way. If you think you can get a particular project set up in such a way that it can truly be worked on by the open source community that would be fantastic. We look forward to your ideas

Do I get to work with the charity

Yes of course. We aim to get you both collaborating as quickly and efficiently as possible.

I'm not a professional - can I still get involved?

If you've been studying and feel confident that you can contribute to a project then by all means contact us.
